We had a stain start to develop in the kitchen ceiling and so we called the plumber.  He started by just replacing the seal on the upstairs toilet, but the stain kept growing.  Since we couldn't tell where the leak was coming from, we now have a wonderful 2 foot by 6 foot hole in our kitchen ceiling and plaster dust everywhere!!
